Lewis & Clark Expedition

The first written account of Source Ranch was documented by William Clark, a captain of the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition. In 1805 the group was traveling up the Beaverhead River in Southwestern Montana when Clark noted, “passed a bold running stream which falls from the mountain.” The Captain sent a member of the group to map the springs and called them Collin’s Bold Run.

The time spent in the local area around Source Ranch is considered quite pivotal in the overall Expedition. Historical landmarks such as the Beaverhead Rock, Clark’s Lookout, the Rattlesnake Cliffs, and Camp Fortunate are all within 15 minutes of Source Ranch. For any history buff or guest these spots are great to visit and learn of the Expedition’s incredible journey.

While staying at Source Ranch you can’t help but think about this history. Southwestern Montana is greatly untouched by man and still looks relatively the same as it did when the Expedition traveled through. You can still look down on the scenic Beaverhead River from the above hillsides of Source Ranch and see it as travelers have for hundreds of years.
